Lewis Hamilton is world champion

After a perfect start and despite a few problems in the tire thriller, the 33-year-old Brit was able to be celebrated by well over 100 enthusiastic spectators at the Autodrómo Hermanos Rodríguez on Sunday.

364 days after his World Cup triumph at the same place, fourth place was enough for the Mercedes star to win his fifth World Cup title. Second place was not enough for his Ferrari rival Vettel behind winner Max Verstappen. The 31-year-old from Heppenheim would have had to win and Hamilton would have had to come eighth at most in order to postpone the Brit's World Cup party again. Third place went to Kimi Räikkönen (Finland/Ferrari).

With his fifth title win, Hamilton caught up with Juan Manuel Fangio and is only two triumphs away from Michael Schumacher's record.
