It also became clear who Hamilton had to reckon with in the fight for his seventh pole at the Hungarian Grand Prix: Germany winner Max Verstappen in the Red Bull and Germany star Sebastian Vettel in the Ferrari - both were separated by a measly thousandth of a second in the faster first unit British.

Hamilton is back, even if he was content with third place in the second training session behind Pierre Gasly in the second Red Bull and Verstappen. Vettel was only 13th in the afternoon. However, the Mercedes team is likely to be worried about a problem with Valtteri Bottas' engine. The mechanics changed the drive and installed one that was already in use, so Bottas also avoided a penalty.

In terms of driving, he seems to have recovered from his weak performance at the Hockenheimring - also due to a virus. Thanks to three days of lots of sleep, he can attack Michael Schumacher's next record and thus also in Formula 1. The now 50-year-old record champion took pole at the Hungaroring seven times.

Hamilton can draw level this Saturday; with six victories on the circuit near Budapest, he is already the record holder in the category. “I can assure you that we are working even harder to get back to the front,” emphasized Hamilton.
