Hamilton steals victory from Verstappen

At the end of the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday, the Brit made up almost 20 seconds behind in a nerve-wracking duel and snatched first place from the Dutchman in the Red Bull in Budapest. With three laps to go, the five-time world champion in the Mercedes overtook the desperately struggling Verstappen; his eighth win of the season was perfect thanks to a clever tire strategy. A distant third came Sebastian Vettel, who pushed his Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc off the podium in the last few kilometers.

“I'm tired, but that's how it should be,” said Hamilton: “I'm very grateful for how the day went, and also for the team for believing in me so much. If Niki were here today, he would take off his cap.”

In the World Cup standings, Hamilton further expanded his lead over his long-distanced challengers. With now 250 points, the Brit goes into the four-week summer break 62 points behind his teammate Valtteri Bottas; the Finn only finished eighth after a collision at the start. Verstappen, who narrowly missed out on his third victory in four races after the first pole position of his career, is 70 points behind.
