Hamilton on ghost racing: “Better than nothing”

“I don’t know how exciting it will be for the people watching TV, but it’s better than nothing,” said the Brit in a video interview with his Mercedes team. “Racing is racing,” said Hamilton and assured: “I really miss it.” After the winter test drives, Formula 1 had to cancel the season opener in Australia in mid-March at short notice due to the corona pandemic. All further races were postponed or canceled until the end of June. Now the racing series hopes to be able to race again on July 5th in front of empty stands in Spielberg in Styria. “That gives me an empty feeling, the fans make a race,” said Hamilton. But he gets messages from people all over the world who suffer from not being able to watch sports. “This shows how important sport is in people’s lives. It brings us all together, is exciting and rousing,” said the 35-year-old. Further Grands Prix in Europe without spectators are scheduled to follow until September. “It’s like a test day for us,” said Hamilton. “None of us have had the opportunity to exploit the potential of our new cars yet. I’m looking forward to that,” he added. The current forced break gives him the chance to work on physical weaknesses. He hasn't gained any weight, but wants to get fitter than ever before. “It’s a blessing in a way. You appreciate the things you love more,” Hamilton said. The six-time Formula 1 champion assured that he feels “more energy, more inspiration and more determination” for new successes.
