Hamilton surpasses Schumacher's next record

The Briton led a race in the premier motorsport class for the 143rd time during his Grand Prix victory in Russia on Sunday. Just a week earlier in Singapore, the Mercedes driver had equalized Schumacher's record.

In fact, Hamilton now “owns” several of the record world champion from Kerpen’s Formula 1 records, which have long been considered unbreakable. The most important one: With 87 pole positions, Hamilton has long been the leader in this category; the Briton surpassed Schumacher's mark (68) more than two years ago.

More significant Schumacher records could fall by the time Hamilton's contract with Mercedes ends at the end of the 2020 season. The 34-year-old celebrated his 82nd Grand Prix victory in Sochi on Sunday; Schumacher only has 9 more successes. When it comes to podium places, Hamilton is even closer to his predecessor behind the wheel of the Silver Arrows (147:155).

Last but not least: Hamilton's 6th world championship seems to be just a formality 5 races before the end of the season. A maximum of 130 points are still up for grabs, the Brit has a 73-point lead over his Finnish teammate Valtteri Bottas. Schumacher became world champion a total of 7 times (1994, 1995 and from 2000 to 2004).
