Formula 1 test drives: Vettel uninjured in accident

Barcelona (SID) Four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel survived a spectacular accident during Formula 1 testing in Barcelona uninjured. Ferrari frontman Vettel drove straight in turn three on Wednesday for an unknown reason and crashed into the barrier. For safety reasons, the 31-year-old was examined in the medical center on the route; the test drives were interrupted for 40 minutes. On Tuesday, Vettel's new teammate Charles Leclerc (Monaco) had to watch for almost two hours due to problems with the Ferrari's cooling system. Now, according to the Ferrari tweet, a technical defect was once again responsible for the accident. "The car is now in the pits where all the necessary tests are being carried out," tweeted the Scuderia: "The driver is okay." Vettel had already left the medical center at that point. At the time of the accident, the Hessian had completed 40 laps and achieved the second best time of 1:18,195 minutes. However, the car “will probably not be running for the next few hours,” Ferrari tweeted shortly before the lunch break. It may be a defect in the front wing of the new SF90; a long brake mark at least shows that the Ferrari's brakes were apparently intact. Meanwhile, McLaren made a name for itself on Wednesday. First, Spaniard Carlos Sainz set the fastest time of the previous six days of testing in 1:17,144 minutes, then the team introduced two-time world champion Fernando Alonso as the new ambassador. The 37-year-old Spaniard, who left Formula 1 at the end of 2018, will also advise McLaren on the further development of the cars for 2019 and 2020 and will sit in the cockpit himself for some test drives. Renault also announced personnel decisions. The French racing team around Nico Hülkenberg (Emmerich) and Daniel Ricciardo (Australia) brought back the Russian Sergej Sirotkin as the third man. Sirotkin, who drove for Williams in 2018, was already under contract in this role with Renault in 2017. The 23-year-old Formula 2 driver Jack Aitken (Great Britain) and the 19-year-old Chinese Zhou Guanyu, who has been competing in the Formula 3 European Championship for several years, were also signed up for testing purposes.
