The scene was triggered by an overtaking attempt by Pierre Gasly in the Alpha Tauri. The Frenchman hit George Russell's Mercedes, which in turn collided with Zhou's car. Behind it, the pilots tried to avoid it. Vettel hit Albon's Williams, which spun and rumbled into several cars. The Williams was badly damaged and stranded on the side of the track.

Like Zhou, Albon was taken to the stretch hospital. “There were no serious injuries,” said the world association FIA. Zhou was able to leave the medical center during the race. A thrilling chase developed with ever new twists and turns. Verstappen took the lead after a driving error by Sainz. Shortly afterwards, however, the world champion complained of problems and came into the pits for new tires. But things didn't get any better for the 24-year-old, who had previously won six races this season. “The car is 100 percent broken,” reported Verstappen and came back to the garage. Red Bull told him his chassis was damaged. The chance of victory was gone.

Halfway through the race, Hamilton took the lead for the first time because both Ferraris had fresh tires fitted. Leclerc was allowed to pass his slower teammate Sainz in the hunt for the Mercedes star. On lap 34 Hamilton also came for tire service, now the two Ferraris were in front again.

But the spectacle wasn't over yet. Esteban Ocon had to park his broken Alpine. The safety car came to rescue the car and slowed down the field. Leclerc continued driving, Sainz and Hamilton got fresh rubber rollers again. This particularly paid off for Sainz, who was able to overtake Leclerc after the race was released.
