Lauda released from hospital

The treating clinic in Vienna confirmed this and spoke of the 69-year-old's “good general condition”. The three-time world champion will have to “undergo intensive rehabilitation” in the coming weeks, according to a statement from the General Hospital (AKH).

Lauda, now chairman of the supervisory board of the Mercedes factory team in Formula 1, apparently had to undergo the transplant as a result of a delayed summer flu. Lauda's lungs had been severely damaged since his serious fire accident on August 1, 1976 at the Nürburgring. At that time, the Austrian was trapped in the cockpit of his burning Ferrari for 55 seconds, with toxic fumes burning his lungs.

Shortly after the operation on August 2nd, Lauda was fully conscious again, but remained in the clinic for treatment. “The treating doctors and nursing staff wish the 69-year-old a continued good course of health,” the hospital said. Like all transplant patients, Lauda will continue to be cared for by the AKH team.
