Leclerc almost as fast as Vettel: Ferrari also dominates on Tuesday

Barcelona (SID) Ferrari also set the tone on the second day of Formula 1 testing - and without any help from Sebastian Vettel. Charles Leclerc set the fastest lap on the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on Tuesday, positioning himself as the German's team rival on his first outing. In 1:18,247 minutes, the Monegasse was only around eight hundredths of a second behind the best time set by Vettel on Monday. McLaren rookie Lando Norris (Great Britain/1:18,553) took second place, around three tenths of a second behind, with a fairly large gap behind him. Haas driver Kevin Magnussen (Denmark/1:19,206) was third, almost a second behind Leclerc. Mercedes also took things slowly on Tuesday. Valtteri Bottas (Finland) achieved the fastest Silver Arrow lap in 1:19,535 minutes, placing him sixth. World champion Lewis Hamilton (Great Britain/1:19,928) was only tenth. The lap times don't have to be particularly meaningful, especially in this early test phase, but Ferrari in particular made a strong overall impression on the second day. Leclerc was the busiest driver with 157 laps, and the new SF90 apparently ran again without any problems. The W10 from Mercedes was also on the road a lot, Hamilton and Bottas even completed 163 laps together on Tuesday. On Monday, Vettel had already left all competitors well behind with 169 laps and was really raving about it. “I think that was the best start I’ve had so far,” said the Heppenheimer. Williams had to announce the next sobering news. The traditional racing team is behind schedule with the completion of the new car; the tests on Monday and Tuesday were already carried out without Williams. The planned start on Wednesday is now apparently shaky, as the team announced that the former world champions can only be expected after the lunch break. The test drives last up to and including Thursday; the route is open from 9.00 a.m. to 18.00 p.m. with a one-hour break at lunchtime. The second test phase will also take place in Barcelona from February 26th to March 1st.
