McLaren has a new team boss

Seidl will take up his position “during 2019”. The new season starts on March 17th in Melbourne, Australia. “This is an enormous privilege and a challenge that I am fully ready for,” said the German: “The opportunity to contribute to the McLaren legacy is something very special and very inspiring.” Seidl’s commitment is “ “Part of McLaren Racing’s long-term strategy to return to success in Formula 1,” the team said.

The former head of Porsche's involvement in the World Endurance Championship officially bears the title of Managing Director. From 2000 to 2009 he worked as Head of Track Operations in Formula 1 for BMW Motorsport and BMW Sauber. In his new role, Seidl will report directly to McLaren director Zak Brown, who is responsible for all aspects of the team's Formula 1 racing program.

McLaren has stumbled massively in terms of sport in recent years. The former world champion team (eight drivers' and twelve constructors' titles) only finished sixth in the team rankings last season. The last Grand Prix victory was more than six years ago.

After the voluntary withdrawal of the two-time world champion Fernando Alonso (Spain) and the separation from the Belgian Stoffel Vandoorne, the team is also making moves at the driver level with Carlos Sainz jr. (Spain) and Formula 1 newcomer Lando Norris (Great Britain) are making a fresh start in the upcoming season.

McLaren has a new team boss
