Media: Lauda regains consciousness after lung transplant

Vienna (SID) Three-time Formula 1 world champion Niki Lauda is apparently conscious again after his lung transplant. As the oe24.at portal reports, citing a source from the General Hospital (AKH) in Vienna, the 69-year-old woke up from his artificial coma on Saturday afternoon. Lauda could breathe independently again, it was said. Lauda's treating doctor, Walter Klepetko, had previously announced details of the procedure. "Normally a lung transplant takes six hours. But the scale is of course open to the top in difficult and complex cases. With Niki Lauda we were in the normal range," the doctor told the Bild newspaper and explained: "We are very, very satisfied with his development." Every transplant recipient remains "a patient for life," Klepetko explained: "He has to take immunosuppression (drugs that are intended to prevent rejection of the implanted organ) and undergo checks for life." Lauda, now chairman of the supervisory board of the Mercedes factory team in Formula 1, had to undergo a lung transplant in his hometown on Thursday, apparently as a result of a delayed summer flu.
