Mercedes sets the pace in Silverstone training

World Championship leader Lewis Hamilton finished second at his home race in the second session, 0,069 seconds behind teammate Valtteri Bottas from Finland. Hamilton's challenger Sebastian Vettel couldn't get past fourth place behind his Ferrari colleague Charles Leclerc.

Hamilton, the clear leader in the overall standings, is aiming for his sixth victory in his home race on Sunday (15.10:XNUMX p.m.), which would make him the sole record winner. In Silverstone, the world champion and Bottas will find conditions that suit Mercedes better than they did in the Austrian Grand Prix, primarily thanks to the lower temperatures. The race in Spielberg, where the dominant team had to admit defeat for the first time this year, was driven in extreme heat.

Pierre Gasly in the Red Bull was fifth in the afternoon. The Frenchman surprisingly led the rankings after the first training session. Although a best time at the start should not be overrated, the result was good for Gasly. Because he has rarely been able to meet the expectations after his promotion from the sister team Toro Rosso, Gasly found himself exposed to criticism. Most recently he even had to let team-mate Max Verstappen lap him during his victory in Spielberg.

The Silver Arrows underlined their role as big favorites in Central England. From 2013 to 2017, Mercedes had five wins in a row; the series was only ended last year by Vettel. In 2018, the German finished ahead of Hamilton, who, however, had to fight his way forward after an accident in the early stages that was not his fault. Vettel is currently 74 points behind Hamilton in the World Cup, who has already won six times this season.
