Mercedes presents the new Silver Arrow: “Starting from scratch”

The new W10 from defending champion Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas took to the track in Silverstone and is expected to carry the industry leaders to their sixth consecutive world championship title despite the significantly changed aerodynamic regulations.

“The 2019 season presents us all with new challenges,” said Mercedes Motorsport Director Toto Wolff around four weeks before the first Grand Prix in Melbourne (March 17): “We are starting from scratch and have to prove ourselves again. In fact, with the rule changes for the new season, every team has a chance of winning the title and we see everyone as a possible contender.”

The biggest rule changes affect the front and rear wings, which are each wider and less complex. Until last season, the complicated front wing in particular caused strong air turbulence behind the vehicles, which meant that the drivers could hardly drive close to the vehicle in front without losing too much contact pressure. The world association FIA is hoping that the new regulations will result in close duels on the track much more often.

Testing time on the track is very limited in Formula 1; Wednesday's trip was part of an official film day in which a team is allowed to cover 100 km. This gave Mercedes the opportunity to gain practical knowledge before the official tests starting on Monday in Barcelona.

In the morning Bottas was at the wheel, later Hamilton took over. “Driving a new car is like getting to know someone,” said the Englishman: “You want to find out everything about it as quickly as possible before you set off on your journey together.”
