F1 test week in Barcelona: Mercedes surprises with a new expansion stage

Barcelona (SID) With a new expansion stage that is probably very close to the one for the start of the season on March 17th in Melbourne, Mercedes surprised the competition at the start of the second Formula 1 test week in Barcelona. The aerodynamic upgrade included, among other things, modifications to the nose, wing and underbody of the W10 of world champion Lewis Hamilton (Great Britain) and his teammate Valtteri Bottas (Finland). With his morning best time of 1:20,332 minutes on the hard C2 tire compound, Hamilton remained 1,7 seconds behind the Italian Antonio Giovinazzi, who set the fastest lap in the Alfa Romeo in 1:18,589 on the much softer C4 tire. Behind him on the medium mixture (C3) was the Frenchman Pierre Gasly in the Red Bull (1:18,647) ahead of Ferrari's young star Charles Leclerc (Monaco/1:18,651/C3), who, however, had to watch for almost two hours due to problems with the car's cooling system . The Dane Kevin Magnussen completed the most laps in the first four hours of the day in the Haas; after 84 laps his best time of 1:19,644 was enough for fifth place. Second to last in the time table is Nico Hülkenberg (Emmerich/1:20,348/C3), behind the Renault driver was only debutant Lando Norris (Great Britain) in the McLaren (1:22,306/C3). The Williams team did much better than in the disastrous first week of testing. Newcomer George Russell (Great Britain) drove the sixth best time with the C3 tires in 1:19,662.
