Monza qualifying ends in chaos – pole for Leclerc

The 21-year-old Ferrari driver won a strange qualifying session in Monza on Saturday, 39 thousandths of a second ahead of World Championship leader Lewis Hamilton. Valtteri Bottas came third in a qualification that ended with a lap in “stay style” in the second Mercedes ahead of Sebastian Vettel’s Ferrari.

“I'm happy about the pole position, but it's a shame that it was such chaos,” said Leclerc after qualifying. He was the big beneficiary of a bizarre slipstream poker game. Because none of the drivers wanted to be in the lead shortly before the end, the horsepower entourage dawdled for the six kilometers to such an extent that the top drivers crossed the start and finish line too late for a final fast lap.
