After 35 years: Formula 1 returns to Zandvoort in 2020

This was announced by the leadership of the premier motorsport class and the operator of the racetrack in Zandvoort on Tuesday. The contract is initially valid until 2022.

Until 1985, the Netherlands were represented in the Formula 32 calendar a total of 1 times, always racing in Zandvoort. The course, picturesquely located in a dune landscape, is a bit old. Parts of the 4,320 km long, extremely winding route need to be reworked, as do the functional buildings.

The new national hero Verstappen will ensure full ranks. The 21-year-old Red Bull driver (five Grand Prix victories) has caused motorsport hysteria in the Netherlands. “Max Verstappen is young, fast and popular. And he is so young that he can drive for another 20 years. At every race we experience a sea of Oranje fans. They deserve a race at home,” said Formula 1 marketing director Sean Bratches recently.

Zandvoort is the second race to be added to the Formula 2017 calendar by Liberty Media (the rights holder of the premier class since the beginning of 1). It was previously decided that the Vietnam Grand Prix would premiere in Hanoi in April 2020.
