After training was canceled: Formula 1 changes emergency protocol

"In the event that yesterday's weather conditions were to repeat themselves, we have set up a landing area approximately 3 km from the race track where an ambulance and a helicopter can meet outside the stratus zone," an FIA spokesman said on Saturday morning. This zone is at a lower altitude than the Grand Prix circuit (around 600 m above sea level), dense fog or clouds “generally do not form” there. The helicopter would therefore be able to transport a patient to the hospital within the required time. The protocol stipulates that in an emergency a hospital must be reached in a maximum of 20 minutes. Options from the Nürburgring are Koblenz, Bonn and Cologne. The track conditions on Friday were fine despite continuous rain and fog. In Formula 1, however, it must be guaranteed that the rescue helicopter receives permission to take off. The clock ran down from 90 minutes twice on Friday, but the pit lane remained closed during the two training sessions. That's why Mick Schumacher didn't come to his first training session in Formula 1; the Formula 2 leader should have driven an Alfa Romeo. The weather forecasts for the third free practice session and qualifying on Saturday as well as for the eleventh race of the season on Sunday (3:14.10 p.m./RTL and Sky) are significantly better. On Saturday morning, sun and clouds alternated at the Nürburgring, but the temperature was well below ten degrees.
