Dutch party at Verstappen victory

The Briton George Russell came in second in a Mercedes, while Monegasque Charles Leclerc took third place in a Ferrari. Lewis Hamilton, who had led shortly before the end, had to settle for fourth place. “A very nice result,” said Verstappen happily. His team made the right decisions. “It is so special to win your home race. This year I had to work so hard for it.” For Verstappen it was the tenth victory of the season and the 30th Grand Prix success of his career. The 24-year-old further extended his World Cup lead. He is now 109 points ahead of Leclerc with seven races still remaining.

After the start, the order at the front - Verstappen ahead of Leclerc, Carlos Sainz and Hamilton - remained the same. Sainz's first stop caused a stir, and it was not the first time this season that a disaster unfolded: his crew was apparently not ready yet, and an impact wrench was lying on the ground far away from the car. Sergio Perez, who stopped directly behind the Ferrari pits, rumbled over the impact wrench with both wheels in the Red Bull as he drove away. Sainz stood still for over eleven seconds and only returned to the track in eleventh place. “Chaos has happened, chaos,” said Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto on the radio. Hamilton is fast, but falls behind After the 17th lap, Leclerc changed the tires, Verstappen was one lap later - both had themselves changed from soft to medium. The distance between them had hardly changed during the stops, but then the local hero accelerated. Hamilton and Russell, who set off on medium, were now in the lead. However, the latter was not able to stay ahead of Verstappen for long; the Dutchman overtook him at the beginning of the 28th lap. He passed Hamilton because the Brit turned into the pit lane to change to hard tires. Russell followed his teammate a little later.

With the hard mixture, both Silver Arrows were surprisingly quick, overtaking Perez and putting pressure on second-placed Leclerc. The Ferrari driver also picked up hard tires for the final phase and fell back. Verstappen was now leading Hamilton and Russell before a virtual safety car phase was called because Yuki Tsunoda's AlphaTauri had a defect. The top trio used this to change tires.

With 26 laps to go, the safety car actually had to go out on the track, this time only Verstappen and Russell got new soft tires - Hamilton was in the front. When the race was released, Verstappen only needed a few seconds to get back to the front. Hamilton was subsequently overtaken by Russell and Leclerc and was annoyed by the strategy.

Dutch party at Verstappen victory

Max Verstappen continues to successfully defend his World Championship title in Formula 1. As in the previous year, the Dutchman took home victory at the Dutch Grand Prix and thus sparked total “Max Mania” in Zandvoort on Sunday.
