Niki Lauda speaks out in a video message

“As you all know, I’m going through a tough time health-wise,” said the Austrian in the video published by the Silver Arrows: “The support I received from all of you along the way was incredible.” Lauda said he got out of bed “quicker” because he had “a big and strong family at home.”

Lauda, who did not travel to Abu Dhabi for the final race of the season, called the successes of Mercedes and world champion Lewis Hamilton this year “outstanding”. The team “couldn’t have done a better job.”

But Lauda wouldn't be Lauda if, as chairman of the racing team's supervisory board, he didn't demand more titles. “The important news is: I will be there soon,” he said: “Now the pressure is on for the sixth title. Thank you"!

Lauda probably had to undergo the transplant on August 2nd as a result of a delayed summer flu; his lungs had already been severely damaged since the serious fire accident on August 1st, 1976 at the Nürburgring. In October, Lauda was released from the General Hospital (AKH) in Vienna, and the doctors treating him gave him hope for “an almost normal quality of life. He will be able to fly again, race again, drive a car again,” explained Dr. Peter Jaksch.

However, the three-time world champion has to take medication and continues to need a lot of patience in rehab. Like all transplant patients, Lauda will continue to be cared for by the AKH team.
