Porsche plans to return to Formula 1

If you look back at the history of Formula 1, Porsche is certainly not an unknown name. Still operating as its own factory team in the 60s, the brand celebrated its greatest successes in the 80s as an engine manufacturer for McLaren. Niki Lauda and Alain Prost won three World Cup titles. Since then, things have become quiet around Porsche, its involvement in Formula 1 has been discontinued, and other motor sports have been given preference.

But now there should be a comeback. With the change in leadership in the sports sector, numerous opportunities are opening up again. The new sports director Thomas Laudenbach sees Formula 1 not just as a sport, but also as a financial opportunity. “Formula 1 – and this is no secret – is a series that is very interesting in terms of PR and marketing values. And yes, we are seriously looking at it within the group,” he confirmed F1Inside r .

A final decision has not yet been made, but the individual arguments are being weighed up. And there are some indications that Porsche will return to Formula 1. Sustainability should be the focus But Porsche's principles shouldn't be thrown out the window because of a blind entry into the premier class. The existing commitment to Formula E stands for sustainability and electrification - not exactly in line with the status quo of Formula 1. This aspect should therefore play a major role in the decision: “On the one hand, motorsport must remain relevant for series development. The power unit must increasingly be based on an electrical component and the sport must adapt to the conditions of sustainability. But Formula 1 is also slowly but surely moving in this direction; the change in regulations for 2026 envisages a switch to engines with a 50 percent electric content. Backlog should be prevented Therefore, entry into Formula 1 is probably not an issue until 2026. An earlier start would entail sporting and, above all, financial risks. “If you want to get started, it doesn’t make much sense to join a regulation that other teams have been following for years,” says Laudenbach.

Although there will be profound changes to the underbody and other components in the coming season, there is no room for major innovations. “In this respect, it is always a good time to get involved when there is a significant change in the rules so that everyone is forced to tackle a few things.” Audi is competing with Porsche First of all, the method of return must also be discussed. But the VW subsidiary is facing competition from within its own group. According to several media reports, Audi is also said to be working on a similar commitment. Laudenbach also confirmed this: “A lot of things are conceivable there too. You can have a great discussion over a beer in the evening. What sense do two brands make? On the other hand: with two brands you might save a bit of money.”

There are still a few internal company questions to be answered before a comeback. However, it seems to be becoming increasingly likely that Porsche engines will also be heard on the legendary tracks from 2026 onwards.
