Formula 1 reforms: Positive signals for 2021

"We have made great progress and are on the verge of saying: 'This is it. This is how we want to do it,'" said Formula 1 sports director Ross Brawn on Sky Sports F1. There is still room for discussion, "but I think the bigger picture is taking shape," said Brawn. Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto had previously made similar statements. "I think we are working well with the rights holders and the FIA. There are still contentious points and they are being discussed. But it will be good for Formula 1 if we reach an agreement. I'm pretty sure we will "said Binotto. Last Tuesday, the proposed and far-reaching reforms were discussed at a meeting of the Formula 1 strategy group in London. Representatives of the teams, the rights holder Liberty Media and the world motorsport association FIA were involved. The basic agreement in the premier class expires at the end of 2020. "It was a good meeting. Liberty and the FIA presented us with their view of things. We are moving forward," said Mercedes Motorsport Director Toto Wolff. If Liberty Media has its way, the engines should, among other things, become cheaper, simpler and louder. There is also talk of a budget cap and a restructuring of revenue distribution. This is intended to make it easier for other manufacturers to get involved, but the top dogs, Mercedes and Ferrari, would have to accept financial cuts. Ferrari - the oldest team in Formula 1 and endowed with various privileges - plays a key role in the negotiations. Binotto doesn't want to be put under time pressure. "I think it's important to negotiate the right agreement. We should take the time necessary," he said. There was also positive feedback from the smaller teams after the meeting on Tuesday. “We have taken a step forward, the direction is right,” said Alfa Romeo team boss Frederic Vasseur. Günther Steiner (Haas) also spoke of “positive discussions”.
