Sensational comeback: Alonso is given preference over Vettel

The Spaniard will start for Renault in 2021 and won his two titles in the premier class with the French in 2005 and 2006. The factory team confirmed on Wednesday the agreement with Alonso, who turns 39 at the end of this month. According to media reports, the contract is valid for two years with an option for a further season. “Renault is my family, my best memory in Formula 1,” said Alonso: “But now I’m looking forward. My ambitions match those of the team, I will share my experience with everyone, with the engineers, the mechanics and my teammates. The racing team can and wants to get back on the podium, I want the same thing.” Vettel's options are dwindling The return of Alonso, for years one of the most popular drivers in Formula 1, also has an impact on Sebastian Vettel's future career. The German will leave Ferrari after the current season, the free cockpit at Renault is now sold out, leaving Vettel with hardly any attractive options for 2021. Alonso quit McLaren at the end of 2018 and actually said goodbye to Formula 1, after which he worked in rallying and long-distance racing. At Renault he will now be a teammate of Esteban Ocon (France) and replaces the Australian Daniel Ricciardo, who is joining McLaren. Alonso for the third time at Renault This will be Alonso's third start for the French in his career. The successful phase from 2002 to 2006 was followed by a less successful phase from 2008 to 2009. The Spaniard obviously can't give up racing. On his debut at the Dakar Rally in January, he achieved a strong 13th place. At the end of August he wants to take part in the Indy 500 in the USA again in order to finally win the longed-for "Triple Crown" of motorsport, only Indianapolis is missing from his collection: the Formula 1 race in Monaco and the 24 Hours of Le Mans he won twice each time.
