Schumacher out: driver change at Haas official

Nico Hülkenberg is returning to Formula 1 and replacing Mick Schumacher as regular driver at the US team Haas for the new season. “I am very happy that I will be taking up a full-time racing seat with the Haas F2023 Team in 1,” said the 35-year-old Hülkenberg on Thursday before the final Grand Prix of the season in Abu Dhabi. “I feel like I never really left Formula 1. I am thrilled to be back doing what I love most and would like to thank Gene Haas and Günther Steiner for their trust.”

Hülkenberg was most recently a reserve driver at Aston Martin and will start work at Haas on Tuesday during the test drives. Haas had previously announced that they would be separating from Schumacher at the end of the season. The South Tyrolean Haas team boss Steiner was quoted as saying that it was decided to “go our separate ways in the future”. Nevertheless, the entire team “wishes Mick all the best for the next steps on his career path.”

The 35-year-old native of Emmerich has already completed a total of 181 Formula 1 races, but he never made it onto the podium - a negative record in Formula 1. After his debut in 2010 in Williams, he later worked for Force India, Sauber and Renault, among others been.

Hülkenberg has the reputation of “having excellent qualifications and being a solid, reliable racing driver.” These are attributes that would fit the experience of the second regular driver Kevin Magnussen from Denmark. In the future, this pairing will help the team “to move forward in the starting lineup.”
