Schumacher documentary is coming to cinemas

The documentary “Schumacher” will be released in cinemas at least in Germany and Switzerland on December 5th and will trace his career, Schumacher's management announced late on Saturday evening. Among others, Schumacher's wife Corinna (50) and their children Gina (22) and Mick (20) will appear in front of the camera.

This is the first time a film has been made about the racing driver with the support of his family. This also provides previously unpublished videos from the private archive for the documentary produced by the Hamburg company B|14 FILM. Directed by Michael Wech and Hanns-Bruno Kammertöns. The award-winning Wech has already produced documentaries such as “Boris Becker: The Player” (2017) together with Kammertöns.

“Michael's outstanding career deserves to be celebrated 25 years after his first of seven world championship titles,” said his manager and confidant Sabine Kehm: “We are very happy that this film is in such sensitive and ambitious hands.”

The film will not only portray “an incomparable career,” says the official statement: “But also the many facets of a complex man: the merciless and daring Formula 1 driver, the ambitious athlete, the accomplished mechanic with a unique technical flair , the reliable team player and loving family man.”

Schumacher ended his career as a racing driver in 2012. He suffered a traumatic brain injury in a serious skiing accident on December 29, 2013 and is still receiving medical care to this day. Schumacher has not appeared in public since then. The current health condition of the most successful Formula 1 racing driver in history is not discussed in the film. In addition to Mick Schumacher, currently a racing driver in Formula 2, and Gina Schumacher, an internationally successful western rider, father Rolf (73) as well as companions and rivals from the sports scene also have their say.

As Bild am Sonntag reports, the first trailer will be offered to license buyers from international cinema distributors as well as broadcasters and streaming platforms such as Netflix and Amazon at the Cannes Film Festival next week.

The film marks the end of a special year. Schumacher turned 3 on January 50rd, and November 13th marks the 25th anniversary of his first World Cup victory.
