Rare insight: Schumacher's wife talks about the accident drama

“I never blamed God for why this happened. It was just really bad luck. You can’t have more bad luck in life,” the 52-year-old says into the camera with a halting voice. In the Netflix documentary “Schumacher”, which will be available from September 15th, she provides the first insight into the family's life after the tragedy in the French Alps on December 29th, 2013.

Superstar Schumacher suffered a traumatic brain injury in a fall despite wearing a helmet and was in danger of dying for days. His wife remembers that her husband had said to her shortly beforehand: “The snow isn't ideal, we could fly to Dubai.” There he wanted to go skydiving instead, one of the former racing driver's passions. Little insights into life It is the last minutes of the almost two-hour film that at least somewhat satisfy the longing of many Schumacher fans for new information about the motorsport hero. “We live together at home, we do therapy, we do everything so that Michael feels better and does well and that he simply feels our family solidarity,” says Corinna Schumacher. Some previously unpublished photos convey a picture of a harmonious family idyll before the skiing accident.

“It is very clear that I miss Michael every day, and not just me, the children, the family, his father, everyone who is around him. “Everyone misses Michael,” says Corinna Schumacher, before adding: “But Michael is there, different, but he is there, and that gives us all strength.” “I would give up everything just for this.” Mick Schumacher would have a lot to talk to his father about. Schumacher's children, daughter Gina-Maria (24) and son Mick (22), also describe the world-famous father as a family man with whom they experienced many moments of fun. It’s “a bit unfair” that they are no longer able to have moments like this after their dad’s accident, says son Mick. He himself has now made it into Formula 1 as a racing driver and is currently competing in his debut season for the US team Haas. He had so much to talk to his father about, says Mick. “I would give up everything just for this.” The film as a gift The hole that the ski drama tore in the Schumacher family can be clearly seen in this passage of the film. But anyone who now expects details about the sports idol's health will be disappointed. “We never chased the headline, but rather approached it slowly and found a way together. Otherwise that wouldn't have worked either. Ultimately, we had a protective instinct ourselves in the end,” says Vanessa Nöcker, who directed the film together with Hanns-Bruno Kammertöns and Michael Wech.

The family wanted to give Michael Schumacher a gift with the film, says his long-time advisor Sabine Kehm. “She saw the film once and likes it very much and is totally behind it – even in the difficult parts,” assures the manager, who now also supports Mick Schumacher’s motorsport career.
