Sensation in Monza: Gasly triumphs

The 24-year-old Frenchman from Red Bull's second team AlphaTauri benefited from the course of the race and came out on top in Monza, just ahead of McLaren man Carlos Sainz and Lance Stroll in Racing Point.

For AlphaTauri it was the second victory in Formula 2 history to date. The team competed as Toro Rosso from 1 to 2006, and Sebastian Vettel also won in Monza in 2019. For the first time since Australia 2008, none of the “big three” Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari were on the podium.

Hamilton punished World champion Lewis Hamilton received a stop-and-go penalty in the Mercedes for entering the closed pit lane and ultimately ended up in 7th place. His teammate Valtteri Bottas had problems in the early stages and took fifth place. Max Verstappen had to park his Red Bull due to technical problems.

Ferrari experienced another debacle: Charles Leclerc ended up in the barriers after a driving error, but fortunately he was uninjured. The race was then interrupted. Sebastian Vettel also retired early due to a brake defect.

In the World Cup standings, Hamilton (164 points) continues to lead confidently ahead of Bottas (117) and Verstappen (110). The 9th of 17 races of the season will take place next weekend in Mugello. Scuderia Ferrari will then celebrate a special anniversary on its home track: the 1000th race in its Formula 1 history.
