As controversial as this hashtag is seen by many - especially with regard to races in countries that do not necessarily relate to respect for human rights - when it comes to racism, Formula 1 is no joke.

The new protagonist here: Formula 2 driver and Red Bull substitute driver Jüri Vips. On June 21, while he and Formula 2 colleague Liam Lawson were playing video games on a streaming platform, the Estonian-born racing driver made a racist comment that the 21-year-old would come to regret. Red Bull reacted promptly and suspended the Estonian, who was last allowed to get a taste of Formula 1 air during free training at the Grand Prix in Spain in May. “As an organization, we condemn insults of any kind and have a zero tolerance policy for racist language and behavior,” was the racing team’s statement.

Vips is currently seventh in the overall Formula 2 standings and faces an uncertain future in the world of motorsport. “I deeply regret my actions, this is not the example I want to set,” the 21-year-old wrote in an attempt to make amends. But the damage is done, Vips has already been terminated as Red Bull replacement driver and has been replaced by Liam Lawson, of all people, on whose stream the faux pas happened. Lawson is fifth in Formula 2 and is also part of the Red Bull junior team. Vips remains in Formula 2 The only light at the end of the tunnel for Vips is the announcement from his Hitech racing team, which says that the Estonian will be allowed to finish the season in Formula 2 despite being kicked out of Red Bull. “Everyone deserves a second chance,” said team boss Oliver Oakes regarding this decision. So whether Jüri Vips still has a chance of making a Formula 1 debut in the future remains uncertain. Formula 2 also appeared incomprehensible to Hitech's attitude and commented: "Hitech Grand Prix's decision is surprising and would not have been made by us."
