Spectacular engine change at Red Bull

This marks the end of a twelve-year partnership for Red Bull with its previous engine supplier Renault, which has also operated its own factory team since 2016.

"This multi-year agreement with Honda signals the start of a new, exciting phase in Red Bull's efforts to fight not only for race wins, but also for world titles," said team boss Christian Horner.

The development had been apparent for some time. There had already been rumors for the 2016 season that Red Bull could enter into a partnership with Honda. In 2018, the Toro Rosso subsidiary team switched to the Japanese engine supplier. “We are impressed by Honda's commitment to Formula 1 and their rapid development in the recent past at Toro Rosso,” explained Horner.

In the current World Cup season, French driver Pierre Gasly has already scored 18 points in the Toro Rosso, one more than two-time world champion Fernando Alonso (Spain) in the entire 2017 World Cup season in the McLaren-Honda.

With the Renault engines, Red Bull is giving the two top teams Mercedes and Ferrari a thrilling battle in the current World Cup. The Australian Daniel Ricciardo has already won two races and is fourth in the world championship standings. Red Bull won its only world title during the Sebastian Vettel era; the German triumphed in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013.
