“That was my mistake,” said Verstappen afterwards. However, he put it into perspective: “It was only my second mistake of the season after China.” At the race in Shanghai in mid-April, Verstappen rammed Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel and received a time penalty for it.

In fact, the 20-year-old, who became the youngest driver ever to win a Grand Prix in 2016, has already been involved in a handful of accidents or collisions this year - including at 330 km/h with his teammate Daniel Ricciardo (Australia) in Baku at the end of April. The team management assigned him a higher share of blame for this crash.

In the World Championship standings, the heavily bet Verstappen is only in sixth place before the sixth of 21 races, and he is already 66 points behind world champion Lewis Hamilton (England/Mercedes at the top).

Horner continued: “Max is in a car that is capable of winning this Grand Prix. That will hurt him the most because you don’t get that many opportunities to win a Monaco Grand Prix.”

After all training sessions, Verstappen's teammate Ricciardo also dominated qualifying on Saturday afternoon and secured first place on the grid ahead of Vettel and Hamilton. In the narrow streets of Monte Carlo, overtaking is considered almost impossible.
