But around 50.000 camping nights will be lost. Machner emphasized that the campsites directly on the Ring site or near the Ring remain closed, despite the demand from many fans who would have liked to at least experience the motorsport atmosphere in the vicinity of the race track. Every year, the private parties at the various campsites are one of the non-sporting highlights of the race weekends. No public public viewing There is currently a certain amount of uncertainty in the region because of the trailers, as campsites in the more distant vicinity of the ring are of course open as normal. “How the fans will ultimately act cannot be said,” said the managing director, who does not rule out the possibility of spontaneous private public viewings taking place somewhere. Commercially planned public viewings are unlikely to take place. These could possibly have taken place with a limited number of guests, but the lead time for this was probably too short. The same applies to side events or the usual concerts on the race weekend. None of this is on the agenda for the time being. She also immediately announced that fans should not try to get into the ring area because there would be guarded barriers. “The fans are welcome in the pub gardens in the region and can perhaps watch the races together there.” A loss in the millions For the tourism association, the almost 50.000 lost overnight stays result in a whopping loss of around 35.000 euros - around 70 cents per overnight stay. But the loss of value creation in the region is even worse. According to Machner, this is in the millions of euros. Nevertheless, the people in the region are “very happy that Formula 1 is coming – 14 days at that.” Many local companies benefit from this and can deliver and produce. “But people suffer from the situation that no spectators are allowed. The people of Murtal have gasoline in their blood and grew up with motorsport. “Their relationship to motorsport is completely different than elsewhere in Austria,” said the managing director. Because of the strong connection to motorsport, the situation is even worse. She also knows of individual residents who feel disturbed by the noise: “But they were there before Corona and they are an absolute minority - I would say the number is in the per mille range.”
