Verstappen dominates Montreal qualifying

World champion Max Verstappen has confirmed his role as favorite in qualifying ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix. The Dutchman clinched his second pole of the season and the 15th of his Formula 1 career on Saturday in Montreal. The Red Bull driver was 0,797 seconds faster than surprise man Fernando Alonso in the Alpine on a partly wet track, while Ferrari's Carlos Sainz was third. Charles Leclerc is moved to the very end of the starting grid.

“The conditions were difficult,” said Verstappen before the ninth round of the World Championship on Sunday. "I'm very satisfied. The pole position here is great.” “It’s unbelievable,” said the 40-year-old Alonso happily. “We will attack Max in the first corner tomorrow.” Verstappen's Red Bull colleague Sergio Perez got stuck in the track barriers after a ride in Q2 and was unable to continue. The Mexican ended up in 13th place.

Ferrari man Leclerc, on the other hand, has to start his race to catch up from last place. After new engine components had already been installed in the Monegasque Ferrari on Friday, the team decided to swap several more parts on Saturday. Among other things, Leclerc got his fourth combustion engine this year; only three of them are allowed per season.

For the 24-year-old, it is still the next setback in the World Cup title fight. After being on pole four times but failing to win any of the races and instead failing to finish twice, Leclerc is now only third in the standings behind Perez. He is 34 points behind World Cup leader Verstappen.
