Verstappen flies to a confident victory in Mexico

Mexico was already considered Red Bull territory before the race weekend, and the free practice sessions demonstrated the dominance of the Austrian racing team there. It was therefore surprising that after qualifying Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton found themselves on the front row of the grid . World Championship leader Max Verstappen, who arrived 12 points ahead of his British rival, started the race from third place, with local hero Sergio Pérez right behind. Even the supposedly worse starting position couldn't stop the young Dutchman's triumph.

Right in the first corner, Verstappen started an impressive overtaking maneuver and overtook both Mercedes straight away. After the lead change, the first excitement of the race immediately occurred. McLaren driver Daniel Ricciardo cleared Bottas from the field, meaning both had to pit early. The crash also triggered a safety car phase. When the race was reopened, Verstappen pulled away and underlined Red Bull's role as favorite on the Mexican circuit. Super Max pulls away – Hamilton holds his own with Pérez Especially in the first laps of the Grand Prix, the Dutchman set the pace and set several best times. Lewis Hamilton, however, found it difficult to keep up and noticeably lost ground from lap 15 onwards. Verstappen's teammate Sergio Pérez was rarely within striking distance of the Brit. In the end, Verstappen achieved a confident victory that was never in danger and extended his championship lead to 19 points. This brings him one step closer to winning his first world title. Ferrari, on the other hand, was once again pleased with a strong race from Charles Leclerc (6th) and Carlos Sainz (5th). Only Pierre Gasly marred the Scuderia's performance. The Frenchman flourished again in his Alpha Tauri and was crowned the best driver outside of the two top teams.

Next weekend, the Brazilian Grand Prix is the second race of the last triple header of this season. The Qatar Grand Prix follows a week later in Doha. Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi finally conclude this season.

The title is getting closer and closer: Max Verstappen kills two birds with one stone in the first corner of the Mexican Grand Prix and further extends his lead in the world championship. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton did damage control.
