“Verstappen is ready for the title”

“Formula 1 is finally interesting again,” revealed the North Tyrolean. After years of Mercedes dominance, there currently seems to be at least a small advantage for Red Bull. For Berger, their figurehead Max Verstappen is ready for great things: “He is ready for the title because he has the skills, the speed and the right tools for it.”

Verstappen currently leads the championship standings by twelve points over defending champion Lewis Hamilton. The Dutchman and the British Mercedes driver engage in a thrilling duel with ever-changing twists and turns. “The proportion of boring races has been far too high in recent years,” says Berger, who likes it. “First there were Ferrari’s series victories, then Mercedes was the standard winner. That's not what the fans want to see. They want a tough championship fight,” said the head of the DTM touring car series.

The DTM will be making a guest appearance this year on the 4th/5th. September – like Formula 1 on the next two weekends – at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg. The first Formula 1 race there, the Styrian Grand Prix on June 27th, replaces the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal and its original replacement venue in Istanbul. Formula 1 was unable to stop in both countries due to strict corona quarantine rules. Berger is very pleased that Spielberg was awarded a second race as a replacement location. “I have been part of the Red Bull family for more than 30 years and that is of course a great vote of confidence.”
