Verstappen grabs the Texas pole

The Dutchman relegated the British superstar to second place by a clear 0,209 seconds on Saturday (local time). “That feels really good,” Verstappen cheered after the strong performance in front of enthusiastic spectators in Texas. It was his ninth pole position of the season and the first at the Circuit of the Americas in the USA.

Hamilton, who was almost a second faster than Verstappen in the first training session on Friday, simply couldn't get there on the crucial final lap in his Mercedes. “I gave it my all, we struggled a bit in qualifying,” he reported. “The boys were incredibly quick in qualifying. I gave it my all but that was pretty much all we had.” Good omen All eight Formula 1 races to date on the Austin track have been won by drivers who started the race from the front row. Hamilton is the record holder with five wins so far. In each of the last six editions, a Mercedes driver took pole position; before the Corona forced break, it was Hamilton's teammate Valtteri Bottas in 2019 - this series has now been broken. Bottas came fourth behind Sergio Perez in the Red Bull, but lost five places due to a penalty for his engine change.

Hamilton and Verstappen didn't get in each other's way on Saturday - things looked completely different the day before. The defending champion pushed his way in front of Verstappen's Red Bull in his Mercedes and fought a wheel-to-wheel duel across the entire start and finish straight - in the second training session, Verstappen's targeted fast lap was ruined before it had even begun . As The Dutchman called Hamilton a “stupid idiot.” then and gave him the middle finger.

On the Mercedes track in Austin, World Championship leader Max Verstappen surprisingly snatched pole position from US fan Lewis Hamilton.
