Verstappen fastest at the start

The recently much-maligned 20-year-old was the fastest man on the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on Friday in 1:12,198 minutes, although he also benefited from a slow start by the top favorites Sebastian Vettel (Germany) in the Ferrari and Lewis Hamilton (Great Britain) in the Mercedes .

Vettel's teammate Kimi Räikkönen (Finland) came second, around a tenth of a second behind, followed by Daniel Ricciardo (Australia) in the second Red Bull. World Championship leader Hamilton and his first pursuer Vettel ended up in fourth and fifth place. However, unlike his competitors, Hamilton was not on the softest and therefore fastest tires; Mercedes will only use the hypersofts on Saturday.

Vettel, however, initially didn't get going. In the first hour of afternoon training he was mainly in the pits for setup work. When he was finally able to do a few laps, he was around eight tenths slower than Verstappen, who has been particularly noticeable so far this season because of numerous accidents.

Vettel is 14 points behind leader Hamilton in the World Championship standings, who can draw level with record holder Michael Schumacher in the race on Sunday (20.10:XNUMX p.m. CET) with his seventh Montreal victory. However, unlike the competition, Mercedes has to forego the planned use of the engine upgrade due to a "quality problem", which could be a disadvantage on the high-speed track in Montreal.

Ferrari, on the other hand, brings the expansion stage. Vettel had indicated on Thursday that the Scuderia would probably only reveal its true potential on Saturday as planned. The start was not very promising.
