Hamilton achieved the fastest time on the hardest and therefore slowest tire compound. The six-time world champion was 86 thousandths of a second faster than Bottas on the medium rubber. With over half a second more than Hamilton, Sergio Perez and Lance Stroll followed in the Racing Point - the car against which Renault lodged a protest because a certain component was allegedly too similar to last year's car from partner Mercedes - and also as a possible racing team for Vettel will be traded next year. At least Vettel's current boss was able to draw a satisfactory conclusion. “We had to collect data in the morning session, that was important,” said Mattia Binotto. Vettel was sixth in the first hour and a half, Charles Leclerc was seventh. But the data also showed: Both were over 1,2 seconds behind Hamilton. However, the times and placings are unlikely to be of much significance, even if there is a chance of rain on Saturday and Sunday when the qualification (15 p.m.) and the race (15.10:XNUMX p.m.) take place. Hamilton will still be the top favorite going into the third race in three weeks. If he achieves his eighth victory at the Hungaroring in Hungary, he will equal another record set by Michael Schumacher, who won the French Grand Prix eight times at Magny Cours.
