Vettel foams with anger: “Completely blind”

In a furious rage, Sebastian Vettel quickly brought order to his own Formula 1 world. After a serious time penalty for a tough maneuver against profiteer Lewis Hamilton, the Ferrari star felt cheated by the race stewards in Montreal of his first victory in more than nine months and defiantly declared himself the Canadian Grand Prix winner. In parc fermé, the pissed-off German even swapped the number plates in front of the winning car and, with his grudge protest, created one of the most memorable scenes in recent Formula 1 history. “This is not the sport I fell in love with,” complained Vettel.

The exciting scene took place on Sunday in the 48th round. After a driving error in the chicane of turns three and four, Vettel, who had been leading from the start, ended up on the grass. When he had his car under control again on the asphalt, he almost pushed his pursuer Hamilton into the wall. The Mercedes driver braked and prevented a crash - but was deprived of the great opportunity to overtake. “It was a small mistake, I struggled with the rear axle the whole race,” explained Vettel. “The whole race put a lot of pressure on Lewis, I didn’t have much air.”

Vettel was unable to cope with the constant pressure from the five-time world champion. “Of course you don’t want to win like that, but I gave everything until the end. I forced him to make the mistake and he drove onto the grass,” said Hamilton after his fifth win of the season, pulling Vettel close to him on the podium. “You’re stealing the race from us,” the German hissed to the stewards over the pit radio during the Grand Prix. “You have to be completely blind to think that you can drive through the grass and then keep the car under control.” Vettel “no longer understood the world”. Ferrari files a complaint The race stewards punished the dangerous situation with a five-second time penalty. In the final tally, Vettel was 3,658 seconds behind Hamilton. “I think we won the race. We crossed the finish line first, even if the race stewards have a different view,” said Vettel, who couldn’t find anything wrong with himself. Neither does Ferrari. “It's a good sign to see his passion, he's hungry,” said Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto about his stubborn star driver. “We are all hungry and that will help us in future races.” But the Scuderia does not want to accept the sanction. That's why, according to Binotto, she filed a complaint.

However, Vettel has to minimize his error rate. Most recently in Bahrain he spun after a duel with Hamilton and then lost his front wing. So far, only the Englishman has shown world-class consistency, equaling Michael Schumacher's record with his seventh Canadian victory. “I drove my heart out,” admitted Hamilton, who is already 62 points ahead of third-placed Vettel in the World Championship standings.

Mercedes feels no sympathy “I feel no sympathy because no prisoners are taken in this sport. They would have it (victory, Note d. Red. ) taken the same way,” said Mercedes Motorsport Director Toto Wolff in the direction of Vettel and Ferrari. “But I can understand the frustration of a racing driver when things go against him.” Wolff was not surprised that the punishment caused particularly heated emotions in Italy. “It's a bit like referees in football: decisions will always be polarizing. In the end, it’s great for the sport that we have emotions.”

Ferrari and Vettel have to channel their feelings in the right direction. Otherwise, the World Cup will be over for them before the summer break at the beginning of August. “We are competitive, there are still many races left. We will work even harder in Maranello, that can only give us more strength,” said Binotto. The key is to stay positive. “You should also support Sebastian so that he stays positive.” In any case, a Vettel in anger mode doesn’t help Ferrari.
