Emergency braking recommended: Former Formula 1 bosses advise stopping

The fathers of modern Formula 1 advise emergency braking. After long-time managing director Bernie Ecclestone, former world association head Max Mosley also recommended canceling the entire season due to the corona pandemic. “Then the teams and the race organizers would have security so that they can plan and take action. At the moment they are in limbo and many are losing money,” said the former president of the International Automobile Association FIA to the German Press Agency. There is also a standstill in Formula 1 due to the Corona crisis. The first nine of the 22 planned races of the season have already been canceled or postponed. After French President Emmanuel Macron announced that he would ban public events until mid-July, the Grand Prix in Le Castellet scheduled for June 28th will probably have to be postponed. Formula 1 sports director Ross Brawn recently spoke of a possible restart of the season in Europe in July. Waiting doesn't bring security Former FIA boss Mosley believes this tactic is wrong. “By waiting, you risk making the situation worse without being sure that you will win anything,” explained the Briton. “There is no guarantee that racing can start again in July and in fact it is looking increasingly unlikely,” said Mosley. His former companion Ecclestone had also repeatedly advocated foregoing the 2020 season. “Formula 1 would have to be canceled now. For the whole season. Because nobody knows exactly what will happen next,” the 89-year-old said on Sport1. Politicians will not take on the risk of allowing major events for the time being. Ghost racing would be a “financial catastrophe” As a way out of the emergency, Formula 1 is considering races without spectators. “These are possible options,” said FIA President Jean Todt. His predecessor Mosley rejects these ideas. “That would be a financial catastrophe for most race organizers,” said the 80-year-old. According to Mosley, the shortening of the Grand Prix weekends and several World Championship races on one track would “only have a small impact on costs”. The lawyer, who led the FIA from 1993 to 2009, is instead proposing a completely new start for the racing series next year. It is better for the FIA and the rights holders to “act now and seize the opportunity to reorganize and structure Formula 1 in order to put it on a much more solid financial basis for the future”.
