VW and Porsche in Formula 1? That's it

The decision is made in the desert. Max Verstappen could be crowned Formula 1 world champion for the first time this weekend in Saudi Arabia. By December 12th in Abu Dhabi at the latest it will be clear whether Lewis Hamilton might win the world title for an eighth time. Two dates away from the asphalt are no less exciting at this stage. They have to do with the Volkswagen Group, its subsidiaries Audi and Porsche and of course Formula 1.

The so-called planning round will take place at VW in Wolfsburg on December 9th. It sets billions in expenditure for the next five years. Then the group fights hard for the money for new systems and investments. The World Motorsport Association will meet in Paris on December 15th. The committee could then lay down the new engine regulations from 2026. The opportunity for Audi and Porsche. However, Formula 1 makes the adoption dependent on a binding and long-term commitment. The question is: does Volkswagen really want the expensive involvement in Formula 1? If yes: only with Audi or with Porsche? Or with both brands? And what form would this entry take? Would a racing team be bought? Or would you only work with one? Rumors about McLaren and Red Bull Recently there had been rumors about a takeover of the McLaren Group by Audi, which would also allow the Ingolstadt-based company to secure entry into Formula 1. “We do not comment on rumors and water level reports,” said an Audi spokesman for the German Press Agency. The car manufacturer is therefore “continually working on cooperation ideas with various partners.” McLaren almost loudly rejected the speculation.

Porsche, in turn, has been linked to Verstappen's Red Bull team. But as an engine partner, you deliver the drives free of charge and have to pay extra for the lettering on the car. After all, there would be a high probability of being able to quickly compete for victories with Red Bull. Because Audi and Porsche - assuming they get involved - don't just want to take part, they want to show off their technical superiority. The advertising appeal of Formula 1 only really unfolds when it is successful.
