World mourns Sir Stirling Moss: “Racer and gentleman”

“He surpassed the label of legend. His skills in all kinds of racing cars were truly extraordinary,” said Formula 1 sports director Ross Brawn, who counted Moss among his friends. Former Formula 1 driver Martin Brundle described him as a “tremendous racer and gentleman”. Moss “survived the most dangerous era in motorsport” and had “great stories to tell.” The Englishman died on Sunday at the age of 90.

The London native was considered one of the best Formula 1 drivers, but he was denied the deserved coronation as world champion. He came second in the World Championships four times and third three times. As a result of an accident at Goodwood in 1962 and a failed comeback attempt a year later, Moss ended his career. “He surpassed the label of legend.” Ross Brawn “This is a very sad day. Mercedes motorsport director Toto Wolff described Moss as a “larger-than-life figure” who will be remembered for his “impeccable sporting spirit”. Deepest condolences go out to Moss' wife, family and friends.

At the beginning of 2018, after a month-long hospital stay, Moss withdrew from public life and was cared for at home by nurses. His wife Susie attended his 90th birthday celebrations in September 2019 without him. According to media reports, she was also with him in his final hours.
