Williams in Japan with two cars but no replacement

The Formula 1 team Williams will again have two cars at the Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka next week after a crash in Melbourne. But there will be no replacement car.

In Melbourne, Alexander Albon destroyed the car during training, and his teammate Logan Sargeant then had to watch the Grand Prix as a spectator because the third car was missing. Team boss James Vowles confirmed on the team website that both drivers will again have a chassis in Suzuka. “I am confident we can repair the (damaged) chassis,” he said. This was brought back to the factory in England on Monday.

Because certain car parts were delayed before the start of the season, the use of a third chassis was postponed until the third race, and now there are further delays, not least because of the accident in Melbourne. “But we will have a third chassis soon,” Vowles assured.

He explained that building a chassis requires thousands of hours of work and is one of the most demanding jobs in Formula 1. The Williams team is still without a championship point after the first three races of the season. He also let it be known that favoring Albon, who caused the accident, over Sargeant was his toughest decision in Formula 1. On the other hand, it is understandable: Albon scored 2023 of a total of 27 points for Williams in 28.
