“First, three places back on the grid and then that too. For me, the five seconds were just too hard,” said Wolff. However, Wolff rejected the idea that Hamilton could have been distracted by his anti-racism activities. “Of course this is a topic that is very close to his heart. But it certainly had no impact on his racing performance.”

Wolff also explained why both Mercedes drivers had been instructed to stay away from the high track limits. This caused strong vibrations. “We were in danger of losing both cars suddenly. First it occurred with Valtteri, then also with Lewis. The fact that his embarrassing spin was preceded by contact with his Ferrari successor Carlos Sainz in the McLaren made the disaster perfect. Teammate Charles Leclerc showed what would have been possible. The Monegasque drove the lame Ferrari to second place. “For me, one of my best races since I’ve been in Formula 1,” enthused Leclerc.

Wolff rumbles after Hamilton penalty: “Just too hard”

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff did not agree with the time penalty against Hamilton. The Brit received a five-second penalty at the World Cup opener in Spielberg and was therefore thrown off the podium.
