Formula 2: Defect slows down Schumacher

The 24-year-old from the ART team won the main race in Sochi, Russia, on Saturday ahead of his rival Nicholas Latifi (Dams). The Canadian can no longer dislodge de Vries from the top of the standings in the remaining three races of the season.

The new champion de Vries is contesting his third year in Formula 2. In the next Formula E season he will compete for the newly founded Mercedes team from November.

Once again technical problems Schumacher delivered a promising race until the final phase. The rookie started from eleventh place and worked his way up a few positions until smoke suddenly began to rise from the rear of his car. The son of Formula 1 record world champion Michael Schumacher tried to continue the race, but had to go to the garage a little later due to gearbox damage.

At the last race weekend in Monza, Schumacher had already missed the points in the main race due to a technical defect. The Ferrari junior remains eleventh in the rankings for the time being in his first Formula 2 season. Schumacher celebrated his first and so far only victory in Hungary at the beginning of August.

The sprint race will take place in Sochi on Sunday (10.20 CEST), and the last two races will then be completed at the end of November and beginning of December as part of the Formula 1 season finale in Abu Dhabi.
