More safety: Vettel and Co. get a chip in their glove

VettelHamburg (SID) The Formula 1 drivers around Ferrari star Sebastian Vettel (30) will be monitored even more in the future to improve safety. According to information from Sport Bild, the International Automobile Association (FIA) has a chip sewn into the drivers' gloves, which is intended to transmit vital functions to the medical team on the track in the event of an accident. The sensor stores data such as pulse, oxygen concentration in the blood and the driver's movement intensity. "If you know whether the driver is moving and breathing, you can make completely different decisions: Does the car have to be quickly brought into a position where you have access to the driver at all costs? Or can the rescue be carried out gently?" said deputy race director Laurent Mekies about a possible accident scenario. The glove is still voluntary in 2018, but will be mandatory from 2019. "The pilots are very supportive of this step towards greater safety. We are of course also doing this for them and presented the concept in detail in Abu Dhabi 2017. The only important thing for them is that it doesn't hinder their driving," said Mekies. In the coming season, the so-called halo system will also be introduced to better protect the head in the event of a crash.
