362,4 kilometers per hour on two wheels

MotoGP is going faster and faster, and Ducati motorcycles are the main reason for this. At the season opener in Qatar, Johann Zarco reached 362,4 km/h in free training, setting a new speed record. Zarco has replaced Andrea Dovizioso, who reached 2019 km/h at Mugello in 356,7. Dovizioso, who is no longer there this year, was also on a Ducati. Because the home straight at Mugello is a little longer than at the Losail Circuit in Qatar, the 362,4 km/h record could soon be history. But everything has to be right for this to happen. Of course there shouldn't be a headwind, bad weather anyway, and the temperatures also have to be ideal.

What is almost unimaginable for an average motorcyclist is something even high-speed professionals can only achieve with great effort and a lot of training. Michele Pirro is a test rider at Ducati. He assures that the driver can clearly feel even small increases in speed in this area. Nevertheless, he is convinced that it can be done even faster. Of course, you also need an appropriate chassis so that the motorcycles stay on the ground at such speeds.

The MotoGP record is of course still a long way from the highest speed ever achieved on a motorcycle. In the Bonneville salt desert in Utah (USA), Rocky Robinson drove a 2600 cc motorcycle at a speed of 605,69 km/h. MotoGP uses 1000 cc engines. When it comes to speed, Ducati is top The other brands in MotoGP cannot come close to Ducati when it comes to speed. It's been like this for years. Nevertheless, the Italian brand, which belongs to the Audi Group, has so far only produced one MotoGP world champion. That was Casey Stoner in 2007. So the highest speed is not important. The entire setup must fit. Ducati could have taken the decisive step here. After all, the Ducati rider Johann Zarco is in the lead in the world championship standings after two races. In the two races in Qatar, Ducati had to hand over victory to the competition from Yamaha despite top speed.

By the way: Even though the MotoGP machines drive practically the same speed as the Formula 1 cars, the difference is still big when it comes to average speed. Fabio Quartararo achieved an average speed of 167,4 km/h in his victory on Sunday. Michael Schumacher has already driven an average speed of 247,5 km/h for an entire race, and Juan Pablo Montoya has already achieved an average speed of 262 km/h on one lap in Monza.
