Bagnaia wins in Assen, Quartararo crashes spectacularly

The Italian, who started from pole position, set the tone from the first meter, was not deterred by the occasional light rain in the second half of the race and achieved a start-finish success in the last race before the summer break. World champion and World Cup leader Fabio Quartararo crashed twice and was eliminated.

Marco Bezzecchi, who was promoted from the Moto2 class this season, completed the double success for Italy and for the Ducati brand with his first placement in the top three as a MotoGP rider. The Spaniard Maverick Viñales completed the podium on Aprilia. Spectacular departure from Quartararo Quartararo fell after just four laps. The Frenchman, who had won the last two Grands Prix, crashed on Yamaha while trying to overtake second-placed Aleix Espargaro on Aprilia. In the overall World Cup standings, Quartararo still leads by 21 points over Espargaro. After the collision with Quartararo, the subsequent ride into the gravel trap and the drop back in the field, the Spaniard fought his way up to fourth place. Behind him, among others, were the KTM riders Brad Binder (South Africa) in fifth and Miguel Oliveira (Portugal) in ninth.

The Assen event is now followed by the summer break, which is quite long at six weeks due to the cancellation of the Finland premiere, which was planned for July 10th. Things won't continue until Great Britain's World Cup round in Silverstone on August 7th.
