Dovizioso takes pole in Japan

The World Championship runner-up distanced the superior leader Marc Marquez by 0,299 seconds with his Ducati, leaving the Spaniard only in sixth place and second row. Honda driver Marquez, who could secure his fifth title early, fell during training.

The Frenchman Johann Zarco (Yamaha) came closest to Dovizioso in qualifying, 0,068 seconds behind, the Australian Jack Miller (Ducati/+0,137) was third. Dovizioso achieved “pole” for only the second time this season. He has to win in order to prevent Marquez, who leads by 77 points, from being crowned on the Honda home track.

“The track suits our bike,” said Dovizioso happily before the fourth-to-last race of the season (06.45:XNUMX a.m.). “We knew that and did what we planned. But Marc is very fast in the race, it will be a tough battle.”

Rossi only 9. Valentino Rossi (Yamaha), who still has a theoretical chance of winning the title 99 points behind, was only ninth. The two KTM riders start from the fifth row. Britain's Bradley Smith was 13th, just ahead of his teammate Pol Espargaro.
