Sprint races also in MotoGP from 2023

However, according to a survey, drivers' opinions on this are divided. In contrast to Formula 1, the sprint races in MotoGP are to be held on every GP weekend. There were three sprints scheduled in Formula 1 this year - one of which was in Austria. That number could double to six for 2023. In MotoGP, however, there will be additional sprint races on every Grand Prix Saturday. The program for the highest category is already very tight, with a total of four free practice sessions, two qualifying sessions and a Sunday race, and the sport is significantly more demanding and dangerous than car racing. So there have to be adjustments. In any case, the race should be driven over half the race distance and with half the championship points. Emotional presentation The presentation of the plan in the media center of the Red Bull Ring was emotional at times because MotoGP boss Carmelo Ezpeleta rejected the accusation that the drivers had not been informed in a timely and sufficient manner. On the one hand, they are enthusiastic about an additional race, but they also see problems. “So we have twice the risk for the same money,” complained Honda factory driver Pol Espargaro. “More racing means more risk.” The always funny Jack Miller turned the topic around. “This is a good chance for a bonus payment,” joked the Australian, who will be riding for KTM next year. “Not a good idea, I don’t like it at all,” said current World Cup runner-up Aleix Espargaro. The critics of this new concept also see it as problematic that the number of GP weekends will not be reduced despite the additional race. They also pointed out that it might be more important to ban expensive features such as the ride height device or the increasingly flashy aerodynamic wings.
