MotoGP star Dovizioso starts in the DTM: “A big number”

On June 8th and 9th, the motorcycle driver will swap his Ducati Desmosedici GP for an Audi RS 5 DTM and replace the Brazilian Pietro Fittipaldi, who is unavailable due to a scheduling conflict. The DTM announced this on Wednesday.

“This is a big number for the DTM and motorsport as a whole,” said Audi Motorsport Director Dieter Gass: “MotoGP drivers are real heroes in Italy. We are already extremely excited to see how he performs in his DTM debut.” The Italian manufacturer Ducati is part of the Audi Group.

Dovizioso, 125cc world champion in 2004, has only had to admit defeat to Marc Marquez (Spain/Honda) in the premier motorcycle class in the last two years. In the current ranking he is third after four races, just three points behind leader Marquez.

“The car is great, but it is a completely different challenge than with my Desmosedici GP and I have to prepare accordingly. That’s why I did a lot of laps in the simulator before I got into the Audi RS 5 DTM for the first time,” said Dovizioso. Before his debut, the Ducati factory rider will be on the 22nd/23rd. Testing again in May in Misano with the 610 hp Class 1 racing car.
