Alonso will take part in the 2020 Dakar Rally

The 38-year-old will be racing for the Toyota factory team at the premiere of the multi-stage race in Saudi Arabia (January 5th to January 17th, 2020). The organizers of the Dakar Rally announced this on Thursday.

Alonso will compete in Saudi Arabia with co-driver Marc Coma. Toyota is sending a total of four vehicles into the race, including defending champion Nasser Al-Attiyah from Qatar.

After leaving Formula 1 at the end of 2018, Alonso won the 24 Hours of Le Mans for the second time last June - also for Toyota. He then put his sports car career on hold and devoted himself to rallying. He tested Toyota's Dakar emergency vehicle for the first time in August 2018. At the beginning of October this year, Alonso competed in the Rally Morocco and finished in the top 10 on three stages, but was also involved in an accident.

The Formula 1 champion from 2005 and 2006 has been active in various racing series for several years. In 2017 he took part in the Indianapolis 500 for the first time, but was eliminated. A victory in the legendary oval race would give Alonso the “Triple Crown” of motorsport. He has already won the Formula 1 race in Monaco and the classic in Le Mans. At the beginning of 2019 he also won the 24-hour race in Daytona, Florida.

Alonso will take part in the 2020 Dakar Rally

Two-time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso is adding another chapter to his impressive motorsport career and will be taking part in the Dakar Rally for the first time next year.
